I need some help. while riding my '08 ultra the check engine light came on and about 1/2 mile the battery light came on. Voltage regulator right, well I got one and put it on. drove abut 5 miles and the same thing happens. The battery is about a year old. Can someone tell me what else it could be?
The age of the battery means nothing. I have had one start the bike and fail so bad 30 minutes into the ride that the bike died going down the road even though the charging system was fine.
Did you read the failure code for the engine light? If not, there are many threads here you can search for that explain how to read the codes and what each code means. Also how to clear the stored code so the check engine light resets.
If you don't have a multimeter to check votage, go buy a cheap one. They can be found for like ten bucks at any parts store or home improvement center. Make sure your voltage is correct at the battery. Should be 12 not running, around 13.5 running. That will tell you if your charging system is working. If it's 13.5 your charging system is working so take the battery to be tested.
We have Stickies in the Tech Electrical section to help diagnose charging problems. Read and follow them before spending any more cash! You will need a multimeter.
Also be mindful that in the charging system, one bad component can take out another. Read up on how to properly test a charging system and check the VR, stator, and battery. However, as stated above, check simple items like the battery connections first.
