my check engine light & battery light is on my volt meter is showing about 12. Is it a charging problem, bad battery what am I looking for? It all started when I had the lower dash off with ignition switch out when I took it out the clock was on. did I drain the battery it was on for about 6 hours. I went on a 2 hour ride and it came after I stopped at the store. I am going to put it on the charger for the night and see if that helps. Any other ideas let me know
Check Voltage when Bike is off then crank it up and check when running .. Engine Off is 12.7 is 100% Charged... 12 Volts Off is only 25% Charged .. When Running and Charging properly should have 13+ Volts at the Battery .. Can also try a load tester but this is only recommend to do with a Fully Charged Battery if can't get at least 12.6 Volts after Charging I would replace the Battery .. Although also check if your charging circuit is faulty and what caused the Battery Failure..
Ok update charged the battery last night it took the charge fine. So I took it up to the local battery shop to see if it was charging properly and it wasn't at idol it was only 12.2 with some RPMs 12.8 It is needs to be around 13.6 wright what do I need to replace if it is not charging? I feel stupid I can build custom jeeps, cars, & trucks but I feel lost with this bike. I do all my own service. I don't want to take it to the dealer. help!
If do your own Wrenching try the Voltage Regulator First and Pray that does it .. If not will have to be getting into deeper stuff .. But start simple if not the Regulator would be a good idea to replace it anyway if have to get into the Stator..
up date I bought the bike used in my so I figuered the warinty was up. so I went into my dealer to buy the voltage regulator $180+ the sales guy asked if i was still under warinty I said I dont think so. I gave him my vin number he told me I have a wainty until Feb 2010 so there going to fix it
just went through the exact same problem on my '06 RK....it was the voltage regulator as well. But....my warranty expired in August...a month to soon! $246 out the door replaced by dealer. I am in the same boat as you...I am a fabricator...not a bike mechanic....I will know next time...you can get voltage regs on ebay for $120 and less.
