Default Road King windshield swap

Any advise or directions on how to remove the lexan windshield from the mouting braces on a 2001 road king, I took the bolts off and got the fork to windshield parts off but the rest seems held on by double face tape and I'm afraid to pry on it and my heat gun didn't help (I was gun shy about really really heating it up). my goal is to be able to put the stock one in in spring and fall and a short one in for summer. Id kind of like to get a whole second assembly but not sure where to find one other than e-bay or how much a good price is for one. so I'm thinking of just swapping the plastic out good idea or bad? Thanks

3birds: Yes! I did the same job a few months ago. Find a piece of plastic like a strong toothbrush and sharpen it into a wedge shape......or one of those 'plastic' knives from the martial arts shop will do. Heat is your friend. You won't hurt anything with the maximum heat from your wife's hairdryer. I set the original windshield outside on the sunny side of the house for an hour before starting. I then laid a double layer of towels down on the garage floor. By using the hairdryer and the plastic wedgie, I was able to pry all of the metal bars away from the shield without bending anything. The bars went right back on to the replacement shield and everything bolted up with no problem. I used a Memphis Shade replacement shield. Go For It! .... BC

i like your idea of having 2 windshields complete. seems to be less hassle than dealing with changing the lexan over every time. yeah, it'll cost you more, but then you'll have the flexibility of switching to the shorter shield for those days in fall/winter that warm up. or the tall one in the summer when it's pouring rain and you want to 'hide' behind something......

Actually having another day to think about I don't think I will bust apart my original assembly, you can order just the trim peices for a total of $72 so i can create a second assembly and I will unbolt one assembly from the fork to windshield braces and bolt in the other assembly, the part numbers are 5842894 5843194 5840675a 5840875a I am going to see if i can order it when they run a 20% off sale or I might try an online dealer to look for a better deal. I think this will be the pretty easy to do and relatively cheap. Thanks all

If you go to www.chicagoharley.com , they always have 20% off/ Just a thought. Why wait for a local sale, when you can get it now?

I am doing the same thing. Just orderingthe parts needed to mount the shield to the brackets.

Here is my list with prices from www.zanottimotor.com. I am not sure on the shipping yet but I am doing some shopping this morning. I am getting what I think is all I will need. After that it is just a matter of moving the brackets from windshield to windshield.

I did a similar swap of the hardware when I installed a Clearview windshield on my Road King a few months ago - a bolt from a dump truck hit my original at 60 mph (that's a treat!).

It was winter, and I did the swap after a ride in 50 degree weather. The windshield just popped off of the brackets without leaving any residue, I suppose because the glue/adhesive was cold. Might be interesting to see if you could get the windshield cold and have an easier time than all that scraping and cleaning residue off in warm weather.
