Fuel filter shell failure
2008 Road King, 79,800 miles
Many of this vintage had a recall for this, by VIN, mine was not on the list. First, the engine ran terribly, no power, back firing and bogging. Then, no combustion at all, though it cranked strongly. Removed fuel cap and turned on the master switch, fuel gushed across the tank wile the fuel pump ran. My son has a flat bed trailer so the scoot got the ride of dishonor back home., first time.
The filter shell is held to the main piece by a U shaped pin made of small square stock. One of the 4 holes the retaining pin goes through had failed, another had cracked and would have failed soon if the other one hadn"t broken first. I had replaced the filter at 75,000 and had NOTICED nothing, but I didn't inspect very closely.
The new piece (Pn 62229-08B) has more plastic around the holes so hopefully is stronger than the original. The local dealer charged $31.36 and a new filter, Pn 61011-04A (as long as it was already apart) was an additional $17.77. Got out the door for well under the usual "hundred dollars". This piece also holds the fuel pressure regulator. It is a press fit and also retained by a different kind of clip.
At your next fuel filter change I strongly recommend a very close look at the retainer holes in the filter shell. If there is anything that looks like a stress crack or discoloration I suggest replacement before it leaves you stranded. Part numbers and prices shown above in case you might want to get one or both pieces together before the next disassembly and you can get a better price on line before it becomes a rush order.
Over the years I have found that if something breaks on my machine it will likely break on many others. This will leave you stranded. If you have not yet changed a fuel filter, the tank access cover has a gasket similar to the silicone rubber derby cover gasket and does not need to be replaced at each servicing.

Just curious, do you change the filter regularly? I have a 2008 road king and it was part of the recall and replaced....after it failed. On the new one, I had a similar issue , blew the oring out, but blame myself because I had a lot of miles on the filter. Shortly after I made that repair, the fuel line inside the tank from the tank connection failed as well. Close to the same mileage you have. I'd recommend putting the replacement of that line on a to do list.
Yes, those holes are the weak spot, at least on mine. Your part looks like the same as my failed unit, the new one has extra plastic on each side of the holes and blends into the cup top smoothly, not with the square corners.
