Default Changing a Fuel Filter

Has any one changed a fuel filter and how much of a pain in the butt is it. I have a 2001 FLHTCI.

I haven't pulled the filter out of an Ultra but have on a Roadking... Have to open it up a good bit to get all the stuff out of the tank.. Be careful not to break anything.

If I remember right... there is a clamp that has to be removed before all the stuff comes out of the tank to allow the fuel level float to swing free in order to pull eveything out of the hole... Then once you put it all back... use a plastic tie..

Everything may have changed since I did it on an 03 Roadking...

All and all it wasn't real hard to do.. Just time consuming..

It's a real PITA job since you'll have explosive vapors all over the place, gasoline all over your hands and clothes, plus, your fuel gauge will either stop working or will be way off calibration after you're done bending the float assembly. However, after 25-30K miles, a fuel filter really does need to be changed. You'll need a couple of new clamps, too. You might as well change the tubing inside the tank, while you're at it, since cracks develop in the reticulated pipe running from the pump to the filter. Be sure to replace any and all gaskets.

December 2007 Issue of American Iron shows it for a EFI on a 2002 Road king, lots of pics.
I've got 22,000 on my SG and I'm pulling the tank to have it repainted, so I'll change the
filter too.

the float has a hinge to make it swing out of the way to ease in getting it in and out. The trick is tring to figure out how to hold your mouth to get it to stay in that position and find it's way out. There is only one way in and out without bending stuff so just take your time and pull gently. You are going to need a good pair of wire cutters to remove the clamp and to replace them. Also yes the kit does come with all the hoses and clamp that you need but i like to have a few clamps in my tool box so while you are there it's only a few more dollars to have a spare clamp. I reused the tank gasket without a problem as well.
