Default Fairing vibration - help

Was riding 02 EG std through town yesterday and heard a loud "pop" (bolt breaking??) in the front of the bike. I immediately noticed increased vibration in the fairing when passin up or down through 1500-1800 engine RPM. External exam of fairing; everything looks normal. Could this be a broken fairing mount bolt or motor mount. Where would you start looking?; ( I knew I should have bought a service manual!; nearest dealer is 150 miles away)

I would check fairing brace. Just take off the shell, only 7 screws holding . But put socks on your spot light so not to scratch your fairing when removing it. There 3 screws holding the windsheild and,2 on the fairing under the grips ,and 2 under the fairing just turn your bars as far as you can to one side to get one, then turn it to the other side to get the other. You will need trox bits T-27 and a philps screwdriver to remove headlight ring and retaning ring 3 screws to unplug head light. then look inside to see ifyour brace is broke or may be the bolt has loosened or fell off . I know because just took mine off on Monday, not because it was broke but to have some paint work done .I have a 04 but yours should be close to the same.

Thanks guys; I assume the broken brace thing is common based on your fast replies. I look at it this weekend.

You dont have to remove the headlight. Just remove the outer shell with head light intact. You will be able to unplug the headlight once the shell is loose

Diagnosis was right on. Left bracket was broken in the bend right at the upper bolt to inner fairing. I'll bet they want $$$$$ for a new bracket assembly plus it looks like a pain to put on. I'm going to make an "L" shaped repair bracket and bolt it to the factory bracket. Is this breakage common; looks like the factory bracket is pretty light weight for all the vibrations the rubber mounted motor generates at idle and low RPM.

Taking the outer fairing off to look is no big deal, but a faster check is to hold the handlebar grip in one hand and push the outer edge of the fairing with the other hand. If the bracket is good, there will be very little movement; if it is broken, the movement is very noticeable.

it may be a pain to remove the bracket and put back on.
But I would re-weld it and re-inforce it.
Then examine the other side too while you are there.
And re-inforce it at least.
What te heck you're already there and don't want to have
to repeat it again later!

i just repaired mine last weekend. wasn't any way i was going to let the dealer replace them with the same old crap brakets. made a couple of "L" brackets and i was good to go. you would think those brackets would last a bit more than 7k miles and less than one year... [:@]
