Default Intermitten B1005 code

Hey guys so I'm stumped here.. recently I've been getting:
B1005 Fuel Level Sending Unit High/Open Instruments

I've gone though the service manuals diag procedure and everything is fine. I can't seem to reproduce the code tripping.. It happens sporadically.

Eg: today riding fuel gauge is reading just under half, turn corner and gauge drops to E and speedo gas light comes on... straighten out ride a bit then gauge reads again and speedo gas light stays on... then it goes out...

suggestions? is it possible the sending unit is going?

I would sure take a look at the sending unit. Sounds like it looses continuity when turning. I would remove the sending unit and check it out with an ohm meter. I would think you would be able to reproduce the open in the system once the unit is out of the fuel tank and in hand.

it's not doing it when turning it's more when I'm accelerating. the gauge will drop to E from 1/2 or less then the idiot light will go on and stay on tripping the code... Thanks... at least now I know where to focus my diags... any more tips would be appreciated.

So pulled the console and canopy out... got at the float arm and connected the ohm meter up.. findings

SC says Full 7-14 ohms------My reading 9.2
SC says Half 30-38----- Mine 20-25
SC says Empty 74-95 -----Mine 40-45

Safe to say my sending units done?

It's suspect for sure. If your getting the errors from 1/2 tank down, the resistance lessons creating an "open" circuit, where it should be more resistive

thanks 14Guineapig but I have the same manual I was posting the values to get an opinion...

Xpressway--- That's what I was thinking... so I took apart the sending unit, cleaned the contacts and bristles, re-soldered the wires and put a new retaining clip on the float arm removing the excess play it had... now it's working within the specified Ohms as per the SC.

I don't think this is permanent but it will do for now.. Dealer want 160CDN for a new one so I'm going to try to squeeze the life out of this one.. I'll post in a couple day if it's still working or not.

Thanks everyone for the help

Used to be, on variably potentiometers, the coil/board/resistor or whatever they used would develop dead spots. But that's not what yours sounds like to me. If the problem comes back after your cleaning/refresh then I'd be thinking a pinched/grounded/broken wire between the guage and the sender. Or maybe a loose/dirty harness connector.

those were the first things I checked as per the procedures in the SC.... cleaned all connections applied dielectric grease and made sure all connections are good...

Here's hoping...
