09 street glide... Just purchased her with about 21,000 miles. The guy who owned her before me installed rhinehart "slip on" mufflers. Sounds good, but will obviously purchase full exhaust for the set up or change all together... It does NOT have a fuel tuner installed.. I want to do that as well. At the very moment the money is not in the budget... But I do have a "arlen ness stage one big sucker" .. My question is, if I install just the air intake without the fuel tuner at the moment ... Just leave the mufflers on there for the time being and say ride her for the next 3,000 miles like this.. Could it damage anything? I know they come lean from the factory and I know I need to install the fuel tuner. But I have this air cleaner just hanging in the garage and the stock one sucks. Thanks in advance!!!
I wouldn't chance it, If I remember correctly unless your 2009 was a California bike the catalytic converter was in the stock muffler not the head pipe like the year models to follow, so adding the stage 1 air filter may make it run really lean. if it were me I'd wait for a tuner.
First thing that should be on a bike should be the tuner, if you are doing piece by piece. I have V&H FP3, but other folks like different tuners here as well. In my opinion, you will be leaning your bike out too much if you put on high-flow air cleaner before you put on your tuner. Although I wouldn't do it personally, I've read that muffler only probably wont damage - but I'd get that tuner on ASAP if I were you.
For this stage 1 type mods inexpensive (adjustable) Nightrider Vieds is what i'd rec all he needs for the small enrichment a better breathing AC & Slipon stage-1 type mods requires vs a more expensive tuner he doesnt really need unless he's going for cam etc that he didn't mention unless i missed it.
I also with his setup he 1st try the 50% enrichment setting and then 75% enrichment setting to see which seems to do best.
I have the Vieds on my 09 which responded very well the the 50% enrichement setting which made the motor idle better/smoother along with also getting rid of the slight surge it used to have when at light load part throttle cruise & lackluster throttle response too all due to emission regs making fuel calibration /map settings too lean to meet emission std's.
I 1st tried the lower 25% enrichment setting & didn't notice any diff in pref in any way till i went to the 50% enrichment setting which the motor responded very well to right off the bat with no negative impact on fuel mileage which is why i left it @ the 50% setting.
