Starting to run into some electrical problems with my 2008 Harley Electra Glide. Wondering if my stator is slowly preparing for the grave. Had the bike on charger all day Fri. Took it off the charger around 4 pm. Went to start it up in the morning and the engine would not crank. Reattached the charger for about 4 hours and she started up fine but I did notice that the voltmeter was showing a charge rate of up to 14 when riding. On restart it sounded a bit slower to start and then the volts would jump to 14-16. The needle would stay to the right on rides. Someone suggested that it could be the stator. Any idea what this would cost for replacement and how do I prove this is the problem. Are there any better model stators than the stock Harley one? Thanks for you help and suggestions.
First check the battery and connections. Then check the VR and stator by doing the appropriate tests. This should narrow down if it is battery, VR or stator that is causing the issue.
Had a Harley service manager tell me that low voltage = bad stator, high voltage = bad regulator.
A Google search will give you all the info you need to trouble shoot the charging system.
You can also pull the derby cover and smell the primary fluid, a burnt stator has a very strong, unmistakable smell.
it seems you have a battery problem as your gage is always above 12VDC. The stator is putting out and the VR is allowing the charge when it is running. But a dead cell in a battery will suck the charge out when it is not running.

Gauge does dip on start-up (normal I would think), and stay negative for a few seconds, then rapidly advances to overcharge.
As follow-up to my original post, "Harley Electra Glide Stator Problem", just got back from the dealer. Turns out there is no problem with the electrical system of Blue Lightening. Dealer ran full electrical diagnostics an they encounter no problems. Mechanic thinks that what I am seeing is an adoration of sorts due to the height of the seat on the trike. When looking at the gauge dead on, as in regular two wheeled Electra Glide the gauge reading looks normal. Checked it against voltage meter and the charging system was dean on normal.
Made my day. I had visions of having to sign over my first male child for payment. Cheapest I have ever walked out of the dealer... $136.00! Had him check a few other things out while it was there or the bill would have been much less. I guess you could say that it was all a matter of vision.
