I have a 1996 Electra Glide and I just started experiencing some very strange electrical issues. I had the battery disconnected yesterday, hooked the positive back up then as soon as I hooked the negative terminal up the headlight, and all the gauges came on, odd part is the accessories are switched off and the ignition toggle switch is in the off position. The bike will start and run fine but the ignition toggle will not shut it down and is virtually defective. If anyone has any ideas of what could be going on, please feel free to chime in, this is driving me nuts. Also lost power on the radio due to whatever the issue is here, but i cant leave the battery hooked up because the light/gauges will stay on and drain it.

Not since I have had it. I was on the bike friday night and everything was working fine. Came home after the long weekend and go to hook up the battery after charging it and can't figure it out for the life of me.
Sounds like you have a short from a power wire to something in a switched circuit. You need to narrow down which circuit it is. If it was me, I would hook the battery up and let the lights come on, then 1 by 1 pull fuses to see if you can remove the power from the short. Maybe you will get lucky and at least know which circuit the short or power is coming from.

Thanks I will give this a try. Hoping its something stupid and simple to fix
I'm thinking like Charley, 14GuineaPig, sure sounds like your Ign switch is stuck in the Run position. Maybe you could pull the main fuse then pull the connector on the Ign switch, put the main fuse back in and see if anything powers up.
Good Luck
Bill
Thanks for the help guys, oddly enough it was the battery? I'm not sure if it was faulty or what the problem was but it would not hold a charge and when it was getting really low it was somehow tripping everything(lights, dash, etc.) to turn on and staying on?? Makes no sense to me, but then again I don't know jack about electrical. Put a new battery in and shes good to go.
