So I have my new Ultra... LOVING IT! Now I need to pick up an additional headset for the chippie on the back. What I am wondering is this... do I spend the cash on another HD factory headset like the one that came with the bike or go for a pair of aftermarket headsets. Has anyone here compared the factory stuff to the J&M headsets or other brands?

For JMJOHN... how do you feel your headsets are improved over the factory headsets sold by HD?

you messed up , because when i bought my bike they wanted to give me one , so , i told them if you want the sale , you need to throw in the other , so they did

 

i have had both, and got the premium J&Ms. they are great!

the first thing you will notice when you use a J&M headset on your Harley Harmon Kardon system is much improved volume and fidelity on the music,more volume availableon the intercom, and easier to hear and understand the CB,,,,,a very significantdifference ,,,,,,

in fact ,,, if you get Harley's bluetooth cell phone option, thru the system ,,, you cannot hear the phone at all at 60mph with a harley brand headset ,,, even at max system volume ,,, but with the J&M ,,, the cellphone call comes thru loud and clear at 60% volume ,,,,,,

the only complaint I have ever heard is that the J&M mike frequency response curve is enough different from the Harley headset, especially in the lower frequency ranges ,,, that the intercom system vox sensitivity settings are different for each ,, enough so that you need to use two J&M headsets on the system ,,, then everything will work perfect ,,,,, otherwise you cannot find a good vox sensitivity setting if you use one of each ,,,,

the hook-up cord system on the J&M headset is also two-piece compared to Harley's single section cord ,,,, and this is much more convenient to use ,,,,,, and it does not pull out accidentally while riding, like the harley headset cord often does ,,,

and of course it is no secret WHY harley gives you ONE headset with the sale of the bike ,,,,, they want you to BUY the second one and if you already have ONE harley headset ,,, you are less likely to buy a J&M or other brand headset for the second one ,,,,,,

good marketing certainly from their aspect ,,,,,,,

in summary ,,, two good J&M headsets properly installed in a good set of helmets ,,,, is a night and day experience compared to the harley brand headsets ,,,,,, and this is straight from my own personal riding experience and testing ,,,,,

if you go on the J&M website ,, you will not only find Helmet headsets ,,, you will also find various brands of helmet/headset combo's ,,,, with the headsets custom installed at our factory in Tucson ,,,, and those examples are the best performing helmet/headset combinations available anywhere in the world ,,,,,

get the J&M Headset of your choice ,,, then choose the HC-ZH or HC-PH lower section cord for connection to the 20006-2008 Harley audio system ,,,,,,, JMJOHN ,,,, john@jmcorp.com ,,,,,,

 

I have used J&M for yrs on HD and GW. Better sound and ability to use with either bike. Only problem i have ever had is that the new 06 UC has noise in the headset when i transmit on the CB. I sent the headsets and cords to J&M to check, nothing wrong; appreciate J&M's help. The local dealer checked things 3 times before finding that with the passenger headset plugged in the EMI from the connection on the passenger set produced the noise on the CB transmitt. The closer the driver headset to the passenger, the higher the noise. If only the driver headset is used, no problem occurs. Things worked fine on my 95 UC and they work great on my GW (05). I did purchase new lower cords for the 06. Looks like the only solution maybe to wrap the passenger cord at the lower cord connection with foil backed tape to kill the EMI. MY headsets are the 174s which are now several yrs old.

 

Thanks everyone. I wish I had enough cash right now to lay down on a couple of helmet/heaset combos for my new ride. But, as always, the purchase of the new bike,exhaust, thundermax, and K&N "Harley Tax" has left me panhandling at local burger stops...

I am saving for the future however....

try a set of the new J&M shorty antennas on your bike to reduce the potential RF thru the headset, when transmitting on CB ,,,,,,

"OR" tune the stock Harley CB antenna whip to a proper VSWR ,,,,, and I will wager a case or two of Coors lite that the noise during TX with both J&M headsets plugged-in will go away ,,,,,,

I have two J/M's for the bike.....what I don't like is having to turn up the VOX almost to the open postion for the intercom to work without using the push to talk button.

And I've noticed the volume has to be turned up very loud for the radio even though I have the HD amp......

When the intercom is off, the volume works just fine and I can turn the radio up loud with no problem.
