I was told by my Indy to replace my compensator with the SE unit. The original equipment unit was definitely making a lot of noise, so I had a new SE unit installed. First I had a lot of loud whining. I took the bike back in and he loosened the stock tensioner. We now at idle it lakes a horrible clanking and rattling sound. If I run at over 1200 rpm the noise is gone. Went on a mountain trip and my other Harley buddies were asking what the heck the noise was. Anyone else had this issue? Taking the bike back again to have it checked out. Starting to wish I had put in a Baker Drivetrain Comp.
one thing that may help is to change the primary chain? I figure with all this comp stuff going on,its got to be tough on the chain?
60k+ miles on bike. When I(me) did the work this last time I replaced chain, hub bearing. baker makes a JUST noticeable chatter, lowers and fairing amplify it a bit im shure.but all in all with 5k on the baker its par for the cource, se wasnt with out sound either but got worse...
Really must be sure that Comp bolt is torqued down to 175 foot pounds. If even a few pounds loose the thing will rattle.
Something to check anyway.
My Indy is a moonlighting Harley mechanic, I doubt he was low on torque, but I will be having him check it out tonight. I thought this change would have been simple process and I would have a nice quiet Primary.
This is going to sound simplistic, but take it for what it is worth...
Got a '14 Ltd, and some time back, I was having the same compensator rattle and knock everyone complains about. Took it to my dealer while still under warranty and said fix it. He said, before we replace it, try HD Formula+ in my primary. Reluctantly agreed, thinking I'd be right back to him in a week.
I was absolutely amazed at the difference in noise. I don't rattle and knock anymore. Even with the EITMS system engaged and one jug shut down, I get very little noise.
Just returned from week-long trip with a several people with both 103's and 110's. It got hot in the midwest this past weekend, and a few were complaining about their compensator noise. So, while stopped at a dealership, two with 110's had their primaries drained and refilled with Formula+. Results?? Two more believers.
I know it sounds like snake oil, and it won't fix a damaged compensator. But whatever the characteristics of the fluid is, it works to reduce the typical compensator knock and rattle we all hate.

Hmm my Indy went from that to just 20-50w after loosening the tensioner, maybe I will try the HD Formula+ and see if there is a reduction in noise. Comp started making noise with only 70 miles on it. But that was after the loosening and the different fluid.

Most guys (including me) on this group have gone back to Formula+ after trying different fluids. It seems to work the best.
