So far I've got a little over 7,000 miles on my road king and I've followed the book maintenance schedule to the letter - I had to buy the belt tension tester and the rear axle nut adapter to get everything done.

I did do one extra oil change (just primary and motor) because I wanted to at 2500.

I change the fluids more often than I do in my car. Didn't matter if they say you can go 5000 miles. 2500-3000 is when I change them. It's all the other **** that I want to check one.

Lmao!

I always do the fluid changes as recommended, if not a little more often. As for the rest of it, I'm hit and miss. That being said, I go over the bike all the time checking for things, and am in a habit of replacing things at the first sign of trouble, or replacing a few extra things if something has to be torn apart and half the work is done anyways. Maybe I should dust off the manual and see what I'm missing! lol

Define what you mean by religiously. Do I use the recommended "Harley Lube" on the saddlebag and tour pack hinges and lever pivot points? Do I use an inch pounds torque wrench to check the master cylinder cover screws? No. But I do use the maintenance guide as a checklist and do pretty much what it recommends, not exactly to the letter though. I figure I do as much or more of the service than the dealer does.

This.

And I don't test the freezing point of the engine coolant...due to my location.

My dealership doesn't follow the service intervals either. Took my '04 Road King in for a 50k service. " We don't do a 50k, we do a 10k service instead of the 50 ", they told me. Screw 'em!

'Upon further review' the only difference between 10 and 50k service for my '04 RK is the 50k requires a fuel tank filter screen check, disassemble Steering head bearings and lube, and disassemble and change the front fork oil. So says my owners manual.
