Here is a dumb-a$$ed question I have never seen on here. Given that the stock header pipes direct up to 70% of the exhaust out the right muffler and only approx. 30 percent out the left side, what happens if you were to remove all or most of the packing from the left muffler. Would there be any adverse effect on performance. The crossover still acts to scavenge and you may get a tad more sound. Like I said dumb question but what if?
There's no real amount of packing in there, it's just chambered. I experimented with different options even plugging the cross-over to make it a 2-1 just to see how it ran and in the end, you'll do just like most of us which is buy an exhaust. Stay away from true duals unless your trying to loss some low end torque, guarantee you wont like it.
Tucci, I have 3.5 inch Kerker slipons and there is a lot of packing in them. The baffles are about 18" long and packed tight. I would imagine other pipes are different, but mine are that way. I was thinking of pulling half of it out of the left side but not sure if its worth the effort or not. I'm not looking for any power gains, I just don't want to loose any either and would like to even out the note between the two.
I have V&H true duals with the older muffler hate them..... I took out the baffles and installed the thunder torque cones/plates. The difference in the sound from left to right is very noticeable!!!!!
Did i say I hate these pipes...lol
Saving up for a 2 into 1.
I agree with the lower torque on the true duals as i was running a Fulsac on my last bike. however the space it opened up behind the rear cylinder really cooled the bike down

Much truth to this statement. The TD set up takes heat off the right side of the bike.
I guess that really was a dumb azzed question. The 2-2 pipes were engineered to perform as they do. When you just honk them up and stick em back on the bike, the bike isn't going to run to its optimal unless you compensate somewhere else. Sorta like if you just took the valves out, beat em on the sidewalk, put em back in the motor and hope it improves the performance.
Ya can't really go with a seat of the pants feeling to determine if the bike is running better. Ya need to dyno tune it to find out what you're doing to the motor with the shade tree mods.
I had to open some holes in old screaming eagle muffler's so tuner could get probe down them. One sliced a long chisel threw it easy, the other it spun the inside so it flowed straight threw it. That's on the left side and does sound a bit louder. I noticed when it was cold that more flows out that side at idle. It was tuned with it this way and runs strong.
PS he's talking about stock header's and that's what I have too. The muffler's are packed tight on the outside. There two half moon things saposed to be opposite each by other on the inside. If I could of I would of took the loose one out but couldn't, shoved a piece of stainless in it to hold it in the straight threw spot on that side. Can't buy muffler's like I'm talking about anymore, but the idea is the same as OP

The exhaust is not at the best it can be from the manufacturer, they are trying to compensate for emissions, fuel mileage and sound dcbs. True duals will help equal out the exhaust side to side, will you lose some low end torque (yes). Is it something you can live with for having the sound be more equal, higher rpm torque, better flowing & cooler exhaust, I believe so. I put TD higher gearing and went with a bigger cam (Andrews 37G vs SE203) and don't notice any lower torque loss & a lot more torque in the higher rpms. I am happy with the way mine runs, but the only way for me to see if a 2-1 or the stock set up would run any better would be to dyno it, swap the exhaust & redyno it. Not going to happen.
