if i need to flush the brake system, i am inclined to go to dot 5 (silicone) fluid, there was a problem with my old 76 superglide brakes and converting to dot 5 was part of the fix. i'm pretty much a fan of dot 5 as it has a higher boiling point and repels moisture. other than cost i don't know why h d didn't go to dot 5 as a standard fluid. any comments???
Dot 5 was used in the early 2k models up to 04-05 ish, they did get away from 5 when ABS came out, and a few years before. Listen to Mr B. just dont arbitrarily change fluids it can be the worst mistake you could ever make. Sure there are folks that will come here and say they did it and theyre still alive. How much do you want to gamble with your life???? I have cleaned out many a mess from folks mixing fluids. Early 2k bikes were particularly a bitch to flush and get a hard pull.
You never said you changed the fluid, is it original? If so theres a cause of your issue. The fluid probably has the same viscosity as water almost.
I would disassemble and clean everything with denatured alcohol and rebuild with the correct fluid, if then you plan to change fluids I would change out the rubber lines, with braided ones.
