I would agree. Dunlop American Elite or E3.

You have certainly got the maximum life of that tire, the 880's were not known for great mileage thus the new 888 is supposed to be. If you were happy with the performance/handeling of the brand stick with the new888, if not try any of the other recommendations, they all work well under idea conditions. Air pressure and balance are the two big keys to tire longivity, your picture appears to have a section of extreme wear which could be indicative of bad balance. When changing your tire try some type of balance beads, these will keep the tire balanced throughout the life of the tread. Some will call the beads snake oil and others will agree they work well. I have not found a rear tire to go safely beyond 15,000 miles, but I ride heavy and two up 90% of the time with a heavy wrist. All the tires recommended will work, The OEM Dunlops are the most expensive but do seem to last and handle well. Good luck and ride safe.

I had a similar situation years ago, checked my bike over pretty good, was going on a trip from Toledo Ohio to Nashville TN. It looked like my rear tire had plenty enough tread for that ride and them some. I got to TN and noticed in the dirt behind where I parked my bike, there wasn't much tread pattern. Looked at the tire and it was pretty smooth, no like OP's tire but would have been on way back i am sure. So I had it changed while I was there. I read an article shortly there after, I think in H.O.G magazine on the effects of heat and wear on a tire. In short it said, when your tire is new, there is plenty of rubber to dissipate heat. Heat expands and softens rubber. The more wear, the less heat dissipation. So in effect, the hotter the road, and the more worn your tire, the quicker and hotter your tire gets, it wears the tire out exponentially quicker.

So lets say for instance, a new tire, with 11/32 tread, on 100 degree asphalt may wear the tire 1/32 in 3000 miles.
The same situation with 9/32 tread starting, my wear 2/32,
starting out 5/32 may wear out 4/32 and so on.

Point is, when your tires are worn to start with, and you have a big trip planned, watch them carefully and have a back up plan to change them on the road or get a fresh set of tires

Lastly, my experience with the HD Dunlops is with me, mostly solo, my 2011 Ultra Limited got 19000 on the rear tire. I think the newer Dunlops are great for longetivity.

That tire may not "have been in that condition" before you left, but it was worn out and should have been replaced. The rubber didn't just suddenly disappear, Its called negligence.

Call Drew at Hogpro - He'll let you know the same thing I'm about to tell you.

The MC2 in a 200/17 is a bit too wide and will rub. I wanted the same tires when I with with a 21/17 wheel combo. Metzelers wear down too fast.

I ended up with an American Elite rear (200/17) and an Elite III front, both by Dunlop. Was nervous to mix and match, but research and self-testing proved that to be a non-issue.

Underinflation would cause that too.....

I had 880's and liked them well enough, but they didn't last long. I tried the 888's and they get much longer tire life than the 880's.

That's not what I wanted to read. I ordered a Michelin Commander II earlier today. I do know that the Metz would have rubbed had my tech not bend the saddlebag bar a pinch.
As far as other posts....yes I consider this a lesson. I should have checked before I started the trip home. Will do that now and forever. The steel cords are not showing around the entire tire, so who knows how many miles I went on what's left of it. But it was terribly hot on the roads and a good 100 miles or more of various highways that were grooved for resurfacing.
Now my concern is will the MC II rub?

dang. 11,000 miles. I got 15000 on my stock Dunlop and still have tread left in the center. Id go with something else. But then again riding style plays a big role in tread life.
