Go through the frame and around the crash bar at the front. Tie on to rear foot board brackets as well. I have hauled my bike and my friends bikes many times with no damage and the bikes are very secure.

Get yourself something like BikePro wheel chockhttp://www.rampconnection.com/page21.shtml and use the optional front wheel strap tie-down(Bike Pro Integrated Tie Down); add to that ratchet a strap for each side of the rear wheel and it can strap each side of the handlebars just to limit the side to side movement. With the front tire secured via the strap there is no need to compress the front shocks and you can ride into the chock and step off to make the connections.

This is how I do it, with all tension pulling forward and down. Putting a strap on the handle bars is asking for trouble.
