Default New GPS Problem

Yesterday, while riding on the Interstate, I hit a seam between an overpass and the main roadway. It was in a construction area so it was a fairly sharp jolt, but not enough of a jolt to cause any alarm. I wasn't alarmed at the bump in the road, what caused me to freak was when my entire GPS unit (including cradle) disconnected from the fairing "hot shoe", bounced off my right leg and fell onto the Interstate at 70 mph. I saw it sliding down the freeway in my rearview mirror as cars and trucks approached. I felt sick. [:'(] I took the next exit and went back up the frontage to look for the remains of my $600.00 unit, and after a short walk I spotted it underneath the guardrail next to the curb. It was scuffed up a bit, but intact. Amazingly, when I pushed the power button it came on and functioned just fine. It snapped right back into the hot shoe and powered up when I turned on the ignition. I was lucky! I've ridden thousands of miles, and encountered just about every conceivable road condition and never had a problem until that one bump in the road.
I'm going to make a lanyard for it, and if you value yours, you should too.

WOW that was a close one! I put one on my 2610 in fear of the same thing happening to me. I wish Garmin would have made provisions for one. I used a tie wrap threw the back. Not pretty but it works.

The one thing I have determined after reading your post and all of Mac's posts about HD's GPS is that I don't need one. I never got lost without one so why would I want to buy something that blinks on and off all the time then falls off the bike at 70 plus mph.

I'll stick with my atlas

Man, if I saw my 700 dollar GPS sliding down the freeway I would fall off with it.

I've had one mounted on my 03 Ultra for a few months and I love it. Of course, it's just another toy and I could navigate very well without it. I like to set up trips with it (out of state) and plug it into my radio. Then it tells me when I'm coming to a turn and when I should stop and take a rest. I could probably have gone forever without it but like I say, just another toy.

I just noticed that there was a comment about them blinking on and off. I had the same problem when it was new but since I cleaned all the connectors it has not acted up since.

Hope your unit wasn't damaged.

Steve,

With all the problems these things seem to be having you should have just left it on the road. Don't you know that REAL men don't need no damn directions? We're supposed to be lost so our wives can complain that we are too stuborn to ask directions. LOL.

Really, I'm glad the thing was okay and still working for you.

Regards,

Bill

Steve,

Wow, this GPS thing is kicking our butts!

Since getting my new cradle, I have not had single problem. I hit a bump the other day hard enough to jar my teeth and the thing stayed on...

Pics of how you ended up tieing it to the bike when you get 'em.

In retrospect, it's money that might have been better spent on something else. It is a cool toy and does have abilities not found in your road atlas, but it has been a source of some annoyance too. I haven't had any power source problems since cleaning the contacts. While that was annoying, watching it slide down the road was sickening. Sort of like holding a handful of Benjamins up in the wind and letting them go (another good way to **** off the wife ).
