While riding today on my 14 Ultra Limited, the check engine light came on. I also noticed that even though it was in 6th gear, the gear indicator showed it was in 1st. Even when downshifting to 5th and 4th, it's still showed 1st. Except for that, bike was running fine. When I had to slow down for a tight turn (1st gear), the check engine light went off and the gear indicator then worked properly, no matter the gear. After a few more restarts on the way home, the CEL never came back on and the gear indicator worked fine.
I checked for DTC's and under ECM, it shows P0503. Bike is out of warranty.
Anyone else have a similar occurrence or what could be the problem? I know the code points towards the VSS which is buried under the starter.
I know its an old thread, but did you ever resolve this issue? I have a 2014 Iron 883 and encountered the same error code. I hit a bump and the light came on/off. I've reset the DTC code, took it for a quick bumpy ride and no CEL. Hopefully this is the last I'll see the codes.

I did the same thing and the CEL never came back on again.
I never can figure out what it is people have against six gear I love 6th. 6th gear was not made for running around the back roads 55-65 mph. But you know 80 mph speed limit on the highway 6th is wonderful and I dont often find myself down Shifting to pass but when I do downshift so what is the big deal? Those who say why six gear would be the first ones when the speed limits 80 and they only have 5th to run. Back in the day remember when you're running down to the highway you're in 5th gear and you're trying to shift to 6th that's not there? LoL
alright, CEL came back on with the same code P0503 VSS High Speed fail. I noticed on the ride to work, the Speedomter, gear indicator, and turn signal cancel weren't cancelling. From the forums i've read that a sure sign of the sensor failing. SO I tried locating the part on the internet and can't come to a consensus, would anyone with a 2014 XL883n know the part number? I see this--OEM 74402-95B, but noone can give me a definitive answer if this is the part number. Also anyone have a picture of where the actual vehicle sensor is? Not having any luck looking in the internet (surprised!).
I have an 08 ultra and the vss is under the starter with a part #74402-05.Yours may or may not be the same but its a starting point. Before you buy a new one, find it remove it and if its cover with metal fillings and crud clean it.this may fix your problem.
thanks 1340hog, I was able to locate it on my bike and it was a b***** to get to! But yea you were right, its right next to the starter. But nonetheless, I was able to inspect and it it wasn't all that cruddy, so I'm suspecting a failed sensor, and since it was challenging to get to, might as well replace it (ugh no riding for a couple of days!). The part number is the same as yours: 74402-05. Now the hunt for the part begins!

Any luck with the new speed sensor? I'm having the same issue on a 14 fat bob, and considering the vss crappy location I'm wondering if the replacement fixed the issue.
