Default rebuilt title ?

2000 Harley Davidson Road King FLHRI, beautiful machine, and can be gotten for $5000.00. but what does this rebuilt title mean. said it had gotten minor damaged but was totaled = rebuilt title. is this going to be a problem if i sell it. and is $5000.00 to much, is going to need tires. it sure looks good in pictures.

Not sure about where you are, but where I am if something is listed as a rebuild it means it was written off, repaired, and can be registered for the road. The catch is that if the new buyer then writes it off you get nothing for it. It can't be written off twice. If this is the case where you are, then I would think this would impact the resale value. I am looking for a car from my son and just walked away from one for that very reason.

Some where along the line the bike was either wrecked, in a flood, stolen, vandalized or suffered enough damage for the Insurance Company to total it. The Insurance Co. then sold it with a Salvage title and someone bought it and, like here in Utah if it will pass a Safety Inspection you can get a Rebuilt Title and license it.

I rebuilt a couple 2012 FLHTK's and found resale drops at least 25% off KBB due to the "Branded" Title.

just checked with state farm, can get full coverage but if it gets totaled will get a lot less than i would get for regular title. so im thinking $5000.00 is more than enough for it, although $4500.00 would be better. the shop selling it says all the had to do is fix the engine guard. bike has 19,000 miles on it. really does look clean.

Something doesn't sound right to me.
A damaged engine guard should never be enough to total a bike. I know that the guard bolts to the frame so maybe it was totaled because the guard bent the frame.
If you're serious about the bike then my suggestion is to take it to a HD dealer or a different indy and have the bike completely checked out from a safety standards point.

Where I am it's called a salvage. To notify others WHY the numbers don't match.

thats why it should be half price. but then if i dont plan on selling then i dont care about it, and if i get it cheap enough then i get my money out of it riding and enjoying it.

If they changed the engine guard only then review the bolt area of engine guard at the frame.
Not the bottom mount areas of guard but the one top mounting point on frame.
That frame mounting point can bend with a significant drop and be declared frame damage.
Older bike + new frame = totaled by insurance due to labor and frame cost.
The black powder coat paint will be cracked at that one mounting point of frame.
If reported to insurance after such an accident then adjuster would probably total.
Some folks just bend it back and spray paint that one point or use a larger bolt and washer.
If unreported to insurance, the title would have be clean.
Damage does not make it a bad bike if it was limited to that, maybe some bags and windshield but remember that resale could take some significant time.
What happened to windshield?
Most folks want the windshield if they are going to go on a long ride.
The windshield and brackets that hold the glass can cost $500, so i would ask about it.
Seems like many rebuilt title bikes never have the windshield.
Difficult to get into a touring bike for that kind of money.
A branded title makes it much more difficult to resell.
When buying a branded title you really need to think you are keeping it.
3 to 5 years from now someone might offer you $2,500 when you go to sell.
It could present a bargain if you check the bike out well and plan to keep it for 5 years or more.
Only a small fraction of buyers are in the market for a bike with a rebuilt title.

Only a small fraction of buyers are in the market for a bike with a rebuilt title. i hear you there. for sure resale wouldnt be good at all, it would have to be sold cheap, therefore it has to be bought cheap. making me think more towards $4000.00 or $4500.00.
