seen one of the new style flat tethers break on a guy sunday while out. he got lucky and caught the lid before it did any damage. anyone else have one of the break? gonna do something extra to mine as a safety measure.
I havnt seen one break. but my buddy has one on his tour pack. That thing looks just a cheap as the factory cable that comes on them. I wouldn't trust it. I always make it a point to open my tour pack very slowly and put the force on the cable gradually. One day im going to by the Eglidegoodies ultra brace.

That is one of the first things I done when I added the TP to out RK. I made a hinge(and a few for friends) for support and holding. With the 2014 it took redesigning .
Inexpensive and effective fix is a piece of 550 or P-cord. You can find it at Walmart or Cabelas. Remove the inner strands from the casing. Tie knots at the ends of the casing and slip ends behind the tether anchors and tighten. Now you have the tether and the 550 casing ready to take the load if/when the tether breaks.
I don't have the new style flat one, but I had a retractable cable one break while the lid was up. Didn't damage anything. Nothing on the luggage rack, and I was lucky. I'm ordering an Ultra Brace too.

Think I will invest in the $.50 fix, over the $90 buck plus method. No need to drill holes to install parts that you can get at your local hardware store.
Mine broke after about 3 years, like your pal I caught mine before any real damage done (did bend the hinges slightly). Luckily when I used it I held on to the lid as I opened it, never misused it and it could have been a costly failure, don't think I'll try another one. I had the retractable cable model, I think the recent model is different?
