I did the upright and then back on the Jiffy stand, Nothing else came out. I let her drain for quite a while, 15-20 minutes at least, while i tinkered in the garage. Filter was off, dip stick was out. The one thing I think would have helped was , it wasn't hot. I had it warm. Good replies on this thread. Next oil change will be different...

It works for me, but my oil is always hot when I change it. Try it again next time when the oil is hot.

as a matter of fact , I thought doing a oil change with the engine not started was by far more therapeutic for oil drainage..( all the oil in the pan). However heated oil does drain quicker with less oil residue. It is what it is.

Sure. It does drain faster. I am not worried about residue.

I normally do it hot. But I am not scared of doing it cold. I sure don't care about 1/2 ounce the doesn't flow out either.

I have oil coolers, so I have more old oil then this residue.

I run small steam engines on a 12" gauge outdoor railroad. We start by filling the boiler with water to about 1/3showing in the sight glass. An hour and a half later, when steam is up, the glass will be showing 1/2. It's because as the liquid gets heated, it expands, just like anything else. You should show a higher liquid oil level when it is hot.

Same thing happened to me. Took the bike to the dealer who did the first 1000 mike service. Oil was drained and measured, new oil added to halfway up cold check marks. Bike taken for a run to get engine oil hot which was then topped up to the full hot on side stand. I get my bike back ride home some 20 miles and bugger me it’s over full. Now I watched all the service of the bike and saw all the levels checked and re checked and all was good when it left the dealer, so where did that extra oil come from. Needless to say I drained the excess off using a suction device and the excess was enough to fill a standard coffee mug. Even the dealer was mistified. Personally I think it’s trying to make up for the trans fluid migration, which is another problem that I have....... well it is a Harley .

Did you pour a half quart in the oil filter and install then put 3 1/2 quarts in the crankcase? If so that could explain the over fill.

rk classic.
