I have an 08 and can speak good about it. I don't recall reading any posts off the top of my head of problems with that year model or any of the late model kings.
I don't know of any problems that would prevent you from buying one. Most of the problems Keith described I feel is due to people doing a lot of engine work and beating the bike to death. If you do that and don't beef up the clutch, comp, etc, you will wear out the weakest parts in the system. You can have the dealer run the vin and see if any work has been done and if any recalls were completed. If the owner starts bragging about all the engine work that has been done, ask him about the clutch upgrades and compensator, etc. If he looks at you funny then I would be cautious.

I disagree! Plenty of bikes that only have a stage 1 that experienced these problems. Heck, I own a 13 touring bike and love it, but again, these problems are not uncommon. Whats a stripped shifter shaft have to do with how fast you ride or accelerate? Wheel bearings?
My stock lifters took a **** under warranty (stage 1 at that point), also very common.
The motor on my '13 King is stock, except for the mufflers. I've added some chrome bits here and there, but it's been flawless. Just keep up with the recommended maintenance and you should be good.
Oh, and if you do go for the moped, get a Vespa 300. You can do highway speeds on those.
