Default Aftermarket Tour Pack

I'm going to buy a king tour pack soon for my 2010 SG and don't want to drop a grand doing it. I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket one off eBay or Amazon along with the quick detachable mount. I can get the whole setup already painted to match (black) for around $300 if I go that route. My other option is a used one on CL that I will probably have to paint for $500+. Can anyone that has personal experience with the aftermarket one give me your thoughts on this? Post pictures if you have them please. Thanks

I bought a Mutazu tour pack for my 2005. Fit and finish was fine. The black they used on it was a perfect match for the black on the bike. The tour pack isn't as sturdy as one from HD, but it held up for me for years...then I sold it when I bought a new bike. If there is a weak link in them, I'd say it was the lock. I eventually bought a lock/latch set and premium hinges from HD and installed them. That brought the overall monetary outlay up a bit, but still less than buying one from the MOCO. When I installed mine I bought the metal reinforcing plate that sits on the bottom of the inside of the tour pack. I used fender washers on the underside, too. (I have a tendency to over-engineer things.)

The passenger backrest is OK, but the mounting system stinks. Mine came loose after a while, but since I don't ride with a passenger I took it off and filled in the holes with Bondo.

Speaking of Bondo, I'm an amateur painter. When I had the lid off to fill the holes for the now-gone backrest, I chose to fill in the spot where an emblem usually goes...just cuz I could. Sanded the whole thing down and squirted it black.

The light fixtures fit "OK," but I opted to use some rope putty and squished it around them on the inside just in case.

Ooh! Ooh! There were two tiny holes in the lid that were practically under the backrest. Real small, but they were obviously drilled for some reason. I found out they were there after I rode it in the rain. Had a little water inside, which made me look close until I found 'em. For a quick, temporary fix I put a small, black machine screw in them, but eventually filled them in when I painted the lid.

The lights that came with the Mutazu were just running lights as I recall. I rewired it with some relays and made them stop/run/turn signals.

It sounds like I did a lot of work on it, which I did. It wasn't because it needed a lot of work, though. Most of it was me just piddling around with it. I'm an old retired guy and I have a nice shop full of tools, I have plenty of time on my hands, and I love tinkering with stuff. Even if I had not modified it at all it would have been a fine tour pack. I just get antsy and have to fool with stuff like that.

I'd buy a Mutazu again if I needed one.

In the photo above you can see the bottom reinforcing plate, some of the white rope putty around the fixture buckets, and a length of lightweight chain I used to create a back-up tether in case the other one broke. Which reminds me, check all the fasteners on the hinges and latches, etc. I found about 1/3 of them had not been tightened up from the factory. Two of the loose bolts were those that held the tether to the bottom of the tour pack.

Above you can see where the indentation for an emblem isn't anymore. Filled that sucker in and smoothed it out. In the picture below (excuse the dirt on the lid) you can see where the emblem used to go. It didn't come with one, of course, so I whipped one up in PhotoShop and stuck it there for a while. The small metal emblem above the bumper sticker is just sitting there. I never glued it down. I was just seeing what it would look like.

Excellent review Frank. I'm planning on upgrading the hardware and the backrest anyway at some point so that isn't a big issue. I'm also not getting the one with the lights or rack because I want to keep it smooth looking. I can probably fab my own plate to go in the bottom as well. I do plan to use this with a passenger occasionally so I want to make it as sturdy as possible

Have an aftermarket chopped tour pak. The same pak as you mentioned and Franks, only chopped and bought from another company. Very happy with it after a few tweeks. Paint looks very good. Backrest is was ok, but not great. Added padding and some washers to secure it better - very good now! Mine did not come with a lid gasket. Installed foam gasket from wallies for $4 and the lid is very secure and tight now. No problems with lock and latches, but certainly not high quality. Have ~$260 total into it, including the detach mount. To be 100% honest, the only word of caution would be the backrest. The way it mounts and given the size of the backrest, if the passenger was a plus size, it may not work out as well as a larger HD pak with a full size queen seat back rest.

Forgot to mention, add another $70 to the price as I added Custom Dynamic truflex smoked led strips. They look stealth, yet can be seen when lit up!! Well worth the money imo.

Where in eastern NC are you? I could show you my Mutazu and you can find a buddy with an OEM king and see if you can find any differences between the two.

I've been running mine since 2011 I think, it been a while. No issues or cracks and many road trips loaded up.

I also installed the mutazu chopped tour pack a couple weeks ago on my '16 road glide special. The paint is good and overall it looks about as good as any. The hardware could be better and the wrap around backrest has fitment issues, but overall I'm happy.
