I bought a used 2002 Electra Glide Ultra Classic and it came with the VCI in a box. It was Dynatuned at HD I have the receipts. I went to the HD site and downloaded the tuning software.
When I power up the VCI I get a message that the vci must update before I can continue. I select ok, then before I can continue I get this message and the program closes when I click ok. Message below.... So I can see in the background all the live data so I know the thing is working. It just won't continue with the update.

Computer stuff is way over my head, but... on HTT forum, they were discussing updating the Harley tuner.
They mentioned it had to be updated within a month to work. They knew the new updates, per the EPA mandate, wouldn't allow for non-EPA tunes.
They were discussing adding some text to the update function (again way over my head) that would fool the tuner into thinking it had been updated and allow it to work as before....
Not sure how/if this relates to your situation, but it might be worth searching the HTT forum and reading the thread...
If it is an EPA thing maybe one can revert back to an older version of software.
from my read I have the black box VCI I guess there's a difference this one is considered the street tune and not the race tune. There are two versions of the software out there. What is the street tune and the other is the race tune. The race to software can see my VCI but the street tune software does not see it at all. With the race tuning software I have the above listed problem in my initial post. Maybe I need to figure out how to connect with the street tune software. Any help with that?
I spoke with the service manager at the local dealership last week about the SE super tuner I bought for my bike. He and I have a pretty good relationship and can talk about the pros and cons of Harleys and dealing with the MoCo. He had a long conversation with his Harley service rep and was told that they were still allowed to use the super tuners but that Harley would no longer support them, so if there were any kind of software issue (perhaps like the one you're describing) you were just SOL. I don't know for sure if this applies to your bike, but I'm guessing it's across the board for all the super tuners per EPA mandate. And no the MoCo will not be buying back the super tuners from the individual owners that bought them.
I found an old version of the software on this post https://www.hdforums.com.au/Default....mid=24&tpage=2
I downloaded the software leaving the other version right where it was. When I tried to open it, nothing happened.... Well that's not the end, Right click on the icon and select run as administrator.... Wait for it .... It took almost a full min before something happened and it opened. very ugly looking but it was there. I connected my dongle VCI to the computer then to the bike... I turned the ignition on and it gave me the same message that the VCI needed to be updated. NOTE!! I did not have the internet connected during this part of the process. I clicked on ok then I clicked on update... It updated and I could see everything and it worked in the old version.
I then shut the bike off and closed the old version of the software and opened the new. It again wanted to update the VCI I selected ok and this time I did not get the error message...
I selected update and the update succeeded.. All is working as it should.
I looked at a few forums and I also found that after doing runs and saving them a second program called MyTune will help you adjust what the HD software will no longer adjust in the EZTune.
I am not an experianced tuner but I am sure I will get it right. Now to figure out what to select for all the options on the bike so far.
Rinehardt True Dual exhaust and Stage 1 intake air-cleaner kit.
Huge thanks David, kudos.. I bought a pre-owned 2007 Fatboy that had the VCI with it. Had all the same dramas you went through, that was until I came across this thread. After reading your post, whizz bang, it all came together. Cheers mate. Much appreciated.
