Fuel tank overflow?

Fuel tank overflow?
Filled the bike up the other day for a long trip, I sat right on it and put as much fuel in as possible, drove away from the pumps to have a smoke before I hit the highway and the damn things starts dripping fuel from underneath. It stopped within a few minutes, after I took a few steps back with the smoke. Have not had a problem when i fill it on the stand. Anyone confirm that its just an overflow?Streetglide only had 300kms on it when it leaked the fuel.

RE: Fuel tank overflow?
Same thing happened to me today at the dealer. Free tank of fuel, free lunch too, I come back from the "beer tent" and there is my 07 with cones all around it LOL
Apparently someone figured cones would keep people away when they saw the gas, all it did was attract people to look.....with butts hanging out of their mouth LOL

RE: Fuel tank overflow?
On long trips I will fill up with the bike off the jiffy stand, you do get a bit more fuel in but you fill it up over the overflow. I dont think its from expansion because I have filled it up upright and sat on it without putting it on the jiffy stand and there was no overflow. The best way to stop it is do your stop first then fill up when you are leaving. Some times that extra few tenths of a gallon goes a long way when you are trying to go as long as you can. If you regulary stop and you are not putting almost 5 gallons in might not be worth the extra effort.

RE: Fuel tank overflow?
I never quite fill my tank up completely. I fill it full with the bike on the jiffy stand but never completely top it off and have never had the fuel to overflow. I've done it enough that I can now eyeball the fuel in the tank when I'm filling and know when it gets exactly to the right level so that it doesn't expand and eventually overflow. Eventhough I don't completely top it offI can still get about 200 miles (highway riding) before I have to fill up again. Heck, after 200 miles of riding I'm ready to get off for a break anyhow. I guess as I've gotten older my iron butt has turned into a scrap metal butt...lol.
