I've seen pumps off many times. Just afew weeks ago I was filling up a 1 gallon gas can for my weed eater. I was using mixed gas so I wanted exactly 1 gallon. When the pump read 1 gallon I only had .750 in tha gas can. I went in and told the manager and he didn't beleave me. I make sure I don't ever full up my truck at that station.
I just filled up my 01 FLHTCI and it was still running (a little rough). The book says 5.0 gal capacity and it took 5.37 gallons! Either the pump is wrong, which the deadhead working at the station couldn't respond to or these things take more gas than the manual says. If you're wondering why I let it go that long it's because at 35K I thought it was time to replace the fuel filter and had the dealer do it yesterday. My fuel gauge registered 1/2 full and my warning light never came on. Back to the dealer. Is this why we wrench ourselves?
The FLH gas tank has been 5.4-gal. capacity for over a decade, though for some odd reason HD always specs it at 5.0 gal. I measured my '96 RK quart by quart one day and arrived at this conclusion. You were riding on fumes when you rode into that gas station, Prof.
