You are lucky. Most dealers won't replace a part once it has been installed.
Actually, at first they refused to replace it because it was 10 days outside the 90-day warranty. HD showed a part number for the gauge only, which I was ready to order, but it didn't show up on anyone's list as a valid part. IOW, if the gauge goes bad in 100 days I must buy another $140 kit. Disgusted, I called HD and used the old "I just bought a new bike" routine, and the gal told me to take it to the dealer and they'd "see what can be done." Encouraged, I approached a youngster at the parts counter with the case number, but he gave me a runaround about having the service dept. check the bad oil-temp gauge. I had already diagnosed the problem and determined the gauge was faulty. I brought it over to service and they said they couldn't check it out without having the bike there, which is rubbish. Checking the gauge out is simple if you have a battery, sender, and a multimeter. These idiots either were clueless or were too lazy to try, probably a bit of both knowing these clowns.

Next, getting more disgusted by the minute, I talked to an old parts guy who is head of that department. He knows me well and said, "We'll order the kit. You take the kit, determine what's defective, and bring back the rest, including the bad part." Fair enough. Gauge replaced, all working fine now. Everybody's happy. Should've gone to this guy to begin with, but I'm trying to train the rest of the dealership. It's slow going.

Here is the adapter for the 07.

I think that must be the $62 adapter that is "required" to install it on an '07. In fact, if you have the Premium Oil Cooler you don't need it, but that isn't in the item description.

Excellent, I cannot for the life of me figure out why HD puts that silly ambient air temp thing on there, except to fill up an otherwise empty hole!
As you say, it's there to fill the hole, pi$$ you off, and force you into an impulse purchase for their $140 oil-temp gauge. It's all very calculated by their marketing shrinks.

How about this. On my 07 Ultra there are two allen head bolts on the oil filter mounting flang on the front of the engine. Does anyone know what these are for. It looks like it may be a place to tap into the oiling system for a gauge or a cooler? Any one know?
I don't know what those are for, but I know of no HD or other accessories that plug into them.

exactly how I installed mine

On my 07 Ultra the exact brass bushing from NAPA was #"3220x6x2" which was 3/8" MNPT - 1/8" FNPT. To keep it simple, I just routed the sender cable along the clutch cable to the flairing. I also used the 12v power and ground from the existing air temp gage. The ground was black and the 12v was orange. You could also use the power and ground from the air temp light connector (same colors). I put a spade connector on the ends of the cable from the oil temp gage and just plugged it into the connector.

I agree the pan is painless, but I was just concerned because I want the guage to read as acurate as possible. I have read some posts that claim to have a diffrence between what their pan mounted sending unit says the temp is vs what the dipstick style guage they are also running says. I am just looking at other options that will expose the sending unit to oil as it returns from the engine.

I have an 06 SG (early 06 model). I mounted mine in the pan. I used the 3/8 x 1/8" Bushing. The 1/4 bushing must have been for 05 or earlier.

Anyway I find the response time is slow with the oil pan mounted unit. You have to wait for all the oil in the pan to reach temperature. I used to have a dipstick unit on my softtail, and that was much quicker.

The pan unit is readingat the bottom of the pan and through the orifice of the bushing. With the dipstick unit, the tip of the dip stick is suspended around in the middle of the tank. So you get a better response time.

I can see why the MOCO recommends putting in the oil return line. But on 06 and ealier models its a real tight area to work in. plusyou have to lose thereturn line cover.

Anyone know if that oil filter adapter will work on 06 models?

For what it's worth - the North Texas Harley Davidson dealership installs the oil cooler sending units in the oil pan like discussed above - whether or not there is an oil cooler installed.
I did the install myself and one other thing I learned - if installing in place of the air temp guage then before securing the guage into the fairing, pass your wire harness thru the fairing guage hole and connect the nuts to the guage from the front of the fairing - then slide the guage into the hole and secure it with the mounting bracket. Makes the install easier then trying to fit your fat fingers in that little space. Also, as someone mentioned, use the air temp wires for power and ground - pick either set - they are both powered alike according to the service manual wiring diagram.
