Unhappy Blown (up) motor

Got the sad news. Had my '06 Electraglide standard in to the stealership. Bike stalled and stranded me on the highway. Long story short:
Dealer says for me to do the "Longblock Program" With new cams and a bump up to 95", I am looking at $7700!
To the forum: 1) go in debt an get a new bike? 2) spend $7700 for repairs on a $7500 Electraglide? 3)Used bike, used motor?

Your wallet your choice; however, that price seems high.

What exactly failed? Did the crank spin? Was it a main or rod bearing? Is it debris in the oil?

Reason I ask is you may be able to get yours built by a reputable builder cheaper than 7700 installed assuming there is an Indy you trust or the dealership will take aftermarket parts and do the labor.

If if it's just heads and jugs with no crank work needed then a big bore kit from any number of reputable places would work and you may be money ahead

all depends on what you want. Your bike is 10 years old. A lot has changed but do you want a monthly bill and higher insurance rates?

If if it were me I would see if there was a less expensive alternative or an S&S drop in that would give me what I wanted

Go with the Indy, they won't charge you $95 per hour flat rate and do it in half the time.

We're on the internet and can find a little more about that longblock program here. The basic price for a 95" engine is $3895, plus labour of course and no doubt some other parts/materials.

When I had a new engine installed some years ago there were several additional expenses, including a new compensator and primary chain, because both were badly worn. If the dealer has priced in such things the price you mention doesn't sound so bad.

Ask around for recommendations for reputable indys...get the indy's opinion regarding the problem...discuss rebuild options with the indy. You'll likely save some money with better rebuild options for what you'll spend.

I'm sure there are good dealership mechanics out there...but I'm 2 for 2 on bad experiences with dealers. I had a great experience using an indy (an ex-HD dealer mechanic with a lot of experience with Harley, diesel and airplane motors) for motor work done on my '04 Fat Boy. I did my homework on repair options/parts...ordered the parts, and had them shipped to the indy's shop...he did the work...I save a lot of $$, and learned a lot in the process.

Good luck!

Tons of options for a full crate motor for much less or equal look at S&S, fuel moto, etc. Hell my SE120 was around that price

I would get a second opinion from someone else on what exactly is wrong.

That price is out of line. Contact LD Cycle in Vacaville and ask for Larry or Manny.

It sounds high. 3 years I had a stock 96" take out the cases & crank because the right side crank bearing walked. New cases, new crank assembly, new oil pump, new cam support plate assembly, kept pistons, cylinders, heads, cams. Total parts & labor $3300, covered under ESP. I think at the time the dealer was getting $112/hour.
