Having completed this trip several times in both directions (earliest was in early May) on a RK I would have been very happy to have had my hands protected by a fairing and my feet protected by lowers. I have both now. The advice to reverse your trip direction is very sage. It usually gets warmer as you travel south in addition to having the ability to pull to the right in the numerous pullouts. Some of the Pacific Waves I saw were unbelievable. Heading north i would have missed a couple of viewpoints.
Enjoy you trip and I would make sure you are parked before dusk. Deer everywhere.
If you get passed by an older dude on a 10 year old RK with a fairing and a tour pak smile and wave. I will be in a hurry heading back to Cabo on my bike. Winter is getting to me already.
Thanks for the suggestion, I am an aviation history fan (and cars, and bikes, and guitars). And (obviously) the Sabre was a bit of a (modern) favorite...
Very cool history about your dad!
Then add the mcminnville air and space museum to your stops, basically on the way between the coast line and Portland. very cool.
If you need any help with good roads or stops in Oregon shoot me a message.
I am an Oregon grown boy and miss it every day. When you get to Coos Bay take a side trip out to Charleston Harbor for lunch and to Winchester Bay for the beauty, then when you get to Eurekc Ca. go out to the Somia Cookhouse, it is an old lumber cookhouse that still feeds you family style and the food is awesome, go south into the Redwoods then drop down through Garberville to the coast. Have fun but be careful on PCH there are cages that drive without brains.
I have owned a 2011 RK and put 55,000 miless on it. Traded for a 2014 SG(34,000 todate) and love the music and gps. Having said that I would not of enjoyed the SG with the stock windshield, windshield replacement was done in the first hundred miles because of the movement of helment and glasses. I did rent a RG in Muia last year and that was enjoyable and would be a good choice for you. Not only does it have music, gps but it has huge storage in the fairing that the others don't have. The only con on the RG was sun glare off the gps screen and of coarse the shark nose(not for everybody). Enjoy, sounds like fun.
I've rented an Electra Glide, that got me into touring. Rented a Street Glide with a detachable tour pak, SG have a personality of thumping passengers over bumps if the shocks aren't adjusted. I own a Road Glide Ultra, and one lesson learned is keep the weight low in the saddle bags and light loads in tour pak, i.e. rain gear, dry gloves maybe an extra jacket or sweat shirt. Lower fairings with vents closed will help you stay warm or dry. Wife and I rode for two days in wet weather and stayed pretty comfortable.
Die hard road king guy here. If i was doing a fly and ride in an unfamiliar area i would go a fairing bike with a gps. Stock the street glide and road glide wind screens suck but it depends on your head gear. Full face it wont matter as much. Stock street glide seat sucks. Really is personal preference and confidence.
