I have removed the inner primary to replace the shifter shaft seal. You can tell is was most definitely leaking there.
I did not have a major leak, just a couple of drops on my garage floor.
My question is the main shaft seal behind the sprocket. It impossible to tell if this was leaking...so before I buy a race puller and the socket.....
Is this a common leak point?
I have goggled it....
31k on a 02.
If I put this all back together and its still leaking.....
you can spray an area with 99˘ store foot powder- a seep will wash away the powder.
but the tranny does get pressurised if the vent is blocked ( mud dauber wasp- common) so check that vent tube is clear.
often building pressure will push past the clutch cable O ring, but if the shifter seal is waek...and normally- without pressure- it would be fine.
as above, since you are in there you may as well change the other seal
If I was already that far in it I would replace the seals at a minimum and I would also swap the drive pulley to a couple teeth larger to drop my rpms at speed

So this is interesting......how does it effect the bottom?
I am going with a FM 2 into 1.....
And was looking a 6 speed.
From what I know it drops the cruisinyg rpm by a few hundred RPM
Our year bikes are geared pretty low anyhow and I have ridden a few that did this and found no negatives in ridability
when I ever get in the primary and do any work that requires removal of the primary drive I will swap the pulley, my tiny 88 incher has enough grunt with the few mods to pull it no problem.

I did buy the baker bearing ...thanks for that!
You plan on ever geting rid of this bike ??
IIRC you bought it new right ??
6 speed is spendy but only a handful of bike payments!! I would do a gearset if I had the extra $$
I will be keeping mine but am rather "frugal" so the pulley is greatly appealing mod for me.
Next for me is a oilpump/camplate as I had a tensioner failure a few years back and the pump has always been on my mind. It had score marks on it but seemed visual only but it has bothered me ever since so it gets attention for peace of mind. pressures are acceptable but at sustained high speed it blows oil so perhaps the scavenge side of the pump suffered??
Off subject here sorry
