Figuring out petcock fuel filter
My petcock sprung a leak at the vacuum diaphragm, so I replaced the whole body with the retrofit 61338-02. The i-sheet lists two different fuel filters, one long screen for touring/Dyna 62170-02, and one short screen for Softails 62166-02. I didn't replace the filter, just the petcock body and filter gasket, as the filter didn't want to easily pull out of the bottom of the tank, and my local dealer would've needed to order it for me if I did want a new one.
I didn't get to see the whole filter, other than this: the plastic straw in the filter seats down into one of the holes in the petcock body, with the other hole being the reserve I imagine.
What, then, is the functional difference between the long and the short fuel filter? I assume the Softail filter would also have a shorter straw, so would using the short filter in my bike give me a longer distance-to-reserve, albeit with less of a reserve?
you can probably reuse it, but clean with a tooth brush, you do want a good seal to keep crap from getting to the petcock so take 5 minutes on this.
if you go through this again Pingel is probably a good choice for a replacement petcock, no vacuum though ( AFAIK)
