From what I have read you can run 12 with stock wires and cables

I am in the process of putting on Wild on 12" reapers and so far, it looks like I will have to extend the heated grip heating element wires (2) and maybe the right hand switch housing wires, it looks close so hopefully I won't have to .

I'm a believer of buying & installing the short wire extensions and going that route....

I installed 12" KST bars on my 2016 RGS and had plenty of wire length. I cannot imagine the 17s have much different wiring. I would give it a try. You can always get the extensions if you need them.

I just installed som Monkey Bar 12" on my 15 RGS and no extensions needed. You will need to cut the zip ties holding the brake and clutch lines.
