I have heard the Ohlins need a rebuild at around 35000 mi. It also depends on how often they are cleaned. I have the #2 adj on my bike and am impressed with the ride quality improvement. Bought mine from Howard.

You can buy Ohlins and never service them, it's up to you. All suspensions should be serviced at certain intervals, the reason is when you have oil inside a housing with dis similar metals and add heat and friction from the parts moving the oil will get contaminated. Doesn't matter what brand. Contaminated oil will act as sandpaper on all the parts inside. The reason you service them is to clean them up, replace worn parts and add fresh oil. The more frequent they are serviced, the less wear on parts so the chances of having to replace parts is less.

All in all, Im satisfied with my ohlins. I have used them on my 2012 roadking and currently using same pair of shocks on my m8 roadglide. They had been rebuilt once. I got about 30k miles on them until rebuilding. You can tell if they need rebuilding. They turn from a cushy ride to like having a pair of pogo stick ride.

Cost me $200 for rebuilding plus shipping.

If I were you, invest on ohlins. I tried progressive, not satisfied.

Who really rides 20-25k yr? I bet most people average 2-4k / yr on the bike and 10-12k / yr in the car. I wish I can ride that much!

Servicing shocks, whatever brand, is no different to servicing front forks. With the industry however manufacturing mostly non-servicable shocks for many decades, we owners have never got into the habit of servicing them - because they are throw-away items. We now have access to shocks that provide us with comfort and performance we have never previously been able to enjoy - so service them whenever you fancy. Howabout at the same time as the forks?!

Per Howard IIRC: If you keep the shaft clean (DON'T go there lol), appx 35K. If you don't they should be sent in around 20K. I'm at 25K and I am sending mine in here shortly.

Me. And plenty of other riders.

I'm not concerned with the cost, I'm concerned with the bike being down for a month.

I have my stock shocks on the shelf.

When I may need my Ohlins retuned, easy, slap on stockers for day or week, or however long it takes. (I have a local guy who can rebuild/upgrade, or send to south Florida)
