Default Rush Big Louies

I have 4" Big Louie slipons on my decatted stock headpipe. Considering going with the 2.5"/3" baffle option, but I had a quick question that may speed up my purchase...

What does the fabric wrap around the baffles do? Why does it disintegrate? How often does it typically? I'm guessing heat, but I'd like more thoughts.

Yes it does disintegrate. I repack mine ( Rush Mufflers .. same design ) every couple of years, a fairly simple task. The fiberglass matting muffles/reduces the noise. Do not use wire to retain the matting when repacking, use masking tape. The wire ca/will leave 'burn marks" on the muffler.

Is it just for sound? So I could essentially take out the packing and make my bike louder? I guess my concern was heat, but then again I'm guessing theres baffles out there that has no packing...idk.

Yes you could remove the baffles ( obnoxiously loud ) or remove the baffles and remove the packing and reinstall the baffles.

I have the Big Louies with 2.5" baffles with cams and a 107 Big Bore and it is loud but not ear splitting. Best sound after trying about 6-7 other slip-ons. I would call Rush and ask them the best performing baffles for your bike. When I had the cams without the Big Bore Rush recommended the 2.25" for best performance.

I wouldn't remove the baffles; I'd take the packing out and see what happens...but my question is what is the packing actually FOR? Cause if its just for sound dampening, then they're gone. If they're for heat for soem reason...then maybe. I got a pearl bike; I'd rather not have discolored bags.

I talked to them on FB and they said 2.5"/3", but my only reason to go to that would be to get a little more sound out of it, but if I can beef up the sound slightly by taking the mats out, I might be satisfied (And save myself $90)

No the packing is not for heat. It is to reduce the noise. The exhaust has to ( basically ) pass through the baffle with the matting reducing the noise.

I removed my packing in my CVO mufflers, got them a little louder, but not much. When I can afford, I will get louder baffles and try without packing first and repack them if they are too loud. (what? no such thing as too loud?) LOL

Ive been all routes on my 2.5" baffles. Im back to having wrapped, much better in my opinion. Cheap to try tho and if you dont like, re-wrap. I used wrap purchased online, was less that $30

3 inch works fine if you have a cat.in your case a 2.5 will work for you.this is the info I got from rush when putting big louies on my wife's freewheeler with the stock header.
