I might add another option is to drain the oil and remove filter after last ride and leave it that way till Spring, this can keep you from doing dumb stuff like mid Winter starts just to hear it run and create moisture inside the engine. Changing oil in Fall does NOT protect from moisture.
Hey Mike, I think an empty oil tank will rust like an old empty gas tank? And removing the filter, will let moisture in the motor? And, an accidental starting, by someone, to show off Dad's bike, Not worth it! Is this what you do, or is it just an opinion?

I just could NOT drain the oil, and leave the plug out for days, weeks, or months.
I want my rides ready to roll at any time I want, grab the key or fob and go.
I can't stand for one of my rides to be down, even my riding mower.
They gotta roll, man, gotta roll.

I just change it when it needs it, Spring or Fall is no matter to me or any bikes I've owned since 1973.
Don't think there's anything to rust on a dresser or moisture getting in through a pee hole. I just threw the thought in there to get you thinking and to take part, once again, in an oil thread.

Default 3000 Miles or 3 months?

For you guys in the "change it when needed" camp (of which I am one). How long is too long? I never subscribed to the X number of months rule with any of my vehicles. Last year I had some health concerns and didn't ride more than 2,500 miles. I didn't change the oil in the fall. Is one year old oil (Mobil 1) too old? Or just change it every 5K regardless of time?

5K is my rule with my bike. If less than 5K, but over a year, it would be a good idea to change it, but I would go a while longer. I would not sweat it.
Hope you are doing OK.

If that was my my bike I would as others previously stated do the following: change all fluids first, run for a couple hundred miles, then change again. change brake fluid completely as it is hydroscopic, check fork seals and shocks for leaks, replace if needed (can crack if dried out), replace spark plugs (doesn't hurt), and lastly I would put new rubber on it, those tires cannot be trusted to be safe.

Ride, not idle, for about 30 mins. Let cool. Drain and refill. Go for another ride.
