My bike with Andrews 57h cams have this clucking type noise coming from the air filter. Takes some getting use to then you don't even notice it anymore.

If you have a free flow intake, you may just be hearing reversion. If so, there is nothing you can do except try to put a cover over the filter (I bent aluminum and put it over the filter and under the cover where the filter faced me, and it helped a little) and/or ride it.

I'll iterate the issue about having the work done at a dealer.
Find an independent Harley shop that is authorized to do warranty work. Plenty of them out there. Also, a dyno tune will do a whole lot better than a "One Size Fits All" map.

Not with 255's because they are mild cams with short cam timing/not long on duration and its only long duration perf cams that have issues with reversion.

Now if at same time cams were installed he also went to an open air cleaner then maybe he is simply hearing common intake noise when he opens throttle a lot more for hills, maybe he's lugging it too much requiring more then normal throttle opening to climb hills when he should downshift.

But if its not that then the higher cyl pressure the mild 255 cams with short duration case can cause detonation on thodays 93 octane fuel esp if it's got 10% ethanol.

When I cammed my bike a couple years ago, I hadda choose between 255s & 254e's. I chose the 254e because it has the same low end roll on torque, but better mid range, and doesn't have the hot start or starter-kill issues issues the 255s have. Nor did it need the ACRs that 255s need. Without them, you will chew up starter motors.

Well here is what I've got. 2010 FLHTK 103, Stage 1 air intake kit, 255 H-D cams W/new cam bearings and lifters. V&H dresser duals with twin slash mufflers. Always run 93 octane gasoline and avoid stations with ethanol. I never lug the bike when riding and am hearing the noise in the 2000 to 2600 RPM range. The bike starts right up every time but idles rough. Sometimes she acts like she wants to cut out or (stutter) when you go to take off and gets a little aggravating at times but it doesn't die. She's going back to the H-D dealer this morning for another round of diagnosis. Hope they get it right this time, because this will make my third trip back since the initial cam swap and I'm getting a little aggravated. Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

I have S&S 551 cams that have a shorter duration than the 255's. It is not detonation. Same open air cleaner. Even without ethanol and/or octane booster, the reversion is definitely common. I put a piece of aluminum to block the sound from coming my way and it has helped some. After a couple of years now, the sound is part of the bike and coupled with either ear plugs or ear canal speakers, that little clack sound at idle is a non-issue. I will say, it helped to find a good indy to take it to and verify that there wasn't an issue years ago.
