The 255 cams are similar to the 551's I have. I advance my timing at idle 4 degrees. Moved the idle from 900-950 up to 1000-1050. Whomever did your cam swap (if not you) should do that idle adjustment for free. that fuel management system do you have, as you need one with that cam.

Sounds to me like you need a set of Rockouts.
I bet what your hearing sounds like a real fast sewing machine tapping metal.

wscott, we'll have to agree to disagree because I've heard the cam reversion on the 255 cams on more than one bike so I know it exists.

Certainly they cant hurt but I doubt this is the source of the problem.

Ticking and clatter are two very different things.

You are correct but the RPM range in which he's describing makes me believe otherwise. Now, if it's doing this all the time then no, the Rockouts won't fix the issue. It would be a lot easier to help diagnose if we could hear it for sure.

NP!

You might be correct!

Like you suggest rockouts work when you have the issue they specifically address.

But in the OP's case here in this thread he specifically stated it only makes the noise when he puts the motor under more load going up hill which is a diff issue.

So with that in mind knowing the 255's he installed have fairly short cam timing & duration that increases cyl pressure which often leads to detonation when 255's are installed which is the type noise the OP is describing.

In some cases the higher cyl pressure 255's create also causes hot start issues for some guys that have a weak battery & or weak starter or both.

But i guess there is a remote possibility if the OP is mechanically challenged that he could be describing a detonation type sound when he's in fact hearing more intake noise when motors under more load/more throttle.

Very easy for him to tell if its detonation or not by feeding it more octane & hitting the same hil at same speed in same gear in same approx outside temp to see if the noise stops or not.

If noise stops it was detonation,if the nose persists then maybe he has incorrectly described the noise and is in fat hearing intake noise or something else.

Thats the problem with trying to help diagnose issues on the net be cause sometimes people with less exp dont properly explain the noise etc throwing off people trying to help them out which we dont know is the case or not with the OP of this thread.

Only time will tell on this one.

Happy motoring.

Scott
