Default Loud knocking

I just replaced my inner and outer primary seals. I put it all back together only to start it up and hear these awful knocking noises. Initially it sounds like the starter shaft is hitting hard when engaging, but it keeps going, only a little quieter after start. Any thoughts on what to do besides tear it all down and try again?

Removing only the primary cover is far less than the full tear down and may immediately reveal the problem. A few people have been curious to see what goes on in the primary and have briefly run the engine with the cover off. That may also reveal the problem but be careful that no body parts, rags or tools are anywhere close. Did you use a NEW bolt to install the compensator? They are suggested to be a one time use, don't know if that is because of "calibrated stretching" or just to get the new daub of factory locktite. Any oil in the threaded part of the crank shaft needs to be cleaned out or the Loctite won't lock very tight.

Good intel re: the nut. Might I suggest using carb choke cleaner to get the oil out of that hole...

Did you ride it? You need to rap the throttle while rolling to set the adjuster. Maybe the chain is just loose and hitting the primary

OP, don't even think about riding that thing before you pull the cover and get an eyeball on what the problem is! I strongly disagree with the previous post...I've been in primaries many times and the adjuster will ok out of the gate or it won't be.
