My son has an '02 RK with what I'm assuming are factory "mag" style wheels which are 16's. I have a set of laced wheels from a '13 heritage which are also 16's. Will the axle, belt pulleys, brake stuff from his wheels work with the laced wheels? Just trying to get a heads up before tearing down only to find that it won't work.
No. The axles and bearings are different between the two years. You can change his axle out for a later one or change the bearings to 1 inch bearings. I don't know about hub width, the wheel spacers might need to change.
Old hippie, what did it take to mount that rear wheel? It's something I've been pondering a long time. I have a 2005 FLH, so I would need a 16x3, correct?

The brake rotors and rear pulley will swap straight over. Will the Heritage front wheel take two rotors? A quick way to swap bearing size is to buy H-D bearing kits. They come with a pair of bearings (use 1", same size as your current wheels) plus the spacer that goes inside the hub between them. They are intended for fitting new custom wheels, but provide all the parts you need. I did that when fitting later spec wheels to my older bike.

Yes. Fitting FB wheels was a popular swap for RKs for a while. Be aware that FBs from the same era as your bike, being softails, used 3/4" ID rear wheel bearings, not 1" as per your bike. While 1" bearings will fit the FB hub, the hole through the hub may be too small to accept the bearing spacer, meaning you will have to bore the hub to provide clearance. I had to do that with my '02 Deuce rear wheel.
I don't post here hardly at all but I lurk here a lot. That being said I have a pair of 2007 road king laced wheels that I took off my king and was going to sell but just haven't got around to it yet. I would make you a screaming deal for them if you are interested in them. I'll be honest though shipping might be a little high for them and I can get pictures for you, let me know. They have appr. 50,000 miles on them and are in good shape. I just put different wheels on to get away from the tubes. Thanks. Not trying to hijack the thread, just trying to help. If this is inappropriate my apologies.

Reason: add commet
To be honest, I bought the road king with the fat boy wheels already on it so can't tell ya for sure what was involved. But I did put a 17" solid disc softail rear wheel and 200 tire on my '09 Electra glide. Used; Sportster pulley, custom rotor and axle spacers along with longer rotor bolts. Works fine without the Cush drive hub.
