Default New speedometer lights

I had my standard speedometer replaced on my 2012 Road King with the HD combination analog speedometer/tachometer. While I am riding in the daytime the backlights go off after a short while and will sometimes come back on. I took it back to the dealer and they said it does that in certain light situations e.g. sunlight on the dial. I cannot find any information on any Harley website, book, or article that states this or addresses this. Can you confirm this? Is this normal? Or Should the backlights be on all the time?

Mine are not on all the time, only when it starts getting dark. No problem here.
I have not seen any printed info on this.
Around sunset the speedo lights come on, then my phone screen changes, then my Zumo, in that order.
Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Same here. Backlights only visible as it is getting dark outside. Lost the documentation years ago but seems to be normal operation so there has tobe a sensor somewhere ( because I forgot to set the clock for months after my battery change and it still, showed backlight at dusk).

Yup, same here...I did see it mentioned in the manual that came with the speedo somewhere. Maybe it's just me but I can't seem to get the colors of the lights to change to a different color. Not sure I would spend the 400 on this unit again...I barely ever look at the tach.

I just replaced mine over the weekend with the same unit and it does the same thing. I didn't read anywhere that it would do that but that's ok, to damn bright out anyways to see the different colors I added...
I do like the Tach feature and the gear indicator, money well spent IMO...
