can you swap a known good ECM from one '02 Ultra to another (to test)?. and if so, anything special need to be done also? I have a rough/unstable idle and it doesn't clear up until over 2k rpm. under load, it's fine. I think it's a programming issue. Thanks.

You've wound up in the Sportster section, where your query may not get as good results as if you posted in the Touring section. There are also other things that can mess with the running of your engine and I recommend you check your FSM for help diagnosing problems like that. IMHO swapping ECM is no substitute for diagnosing the problem with your current one.
i don't believe ecm's are interchangable,as with cars each one is flashed with that spacific vin number.i believe motorcycles are the same way.check the throttle body wiring harness(where it attaches to the throttle body)pins, use dielectric grease.push open the throttle plate and look inside the body if its all black and dirty clean with a throttle body spray.poor condition throttle bodys will cause rough idle.
Thanks for response. I kinda figured just swapping would be too easy! Wiring has been checked. Also new intake gaskets and cleaned/decarboned throttle, intake, intake ports & intake valves (they had ALOT of carbon, but when put back together= ran the same!. I would have thought alittle improvement would be noticed! Maybe the old stage 2 kit has alot of overlap in the cams causing this. That's the way a car engine acts with a big cam. I guess I'll have to tear it down to check something like that.

In your OP you thought it was a programming issue, now you want to tear down the engine? Get it checked out at the dealer. Oh, welcome to the Forum
