Default HELP, replacing handlebars

I feel stupid but I can't figure out how to take the wind deflector off and then the chrome part that covers the handlebars for a RK Custom. Can anyone help this dumb guy. Thanks

Rico

Rico by wind deflector do you mean the wind shield? If it is like my Classic, it should just pull forward. Do you have an owners manual?

from what I was told about the chrome cover you need to remove the headlight and there is a screw that holds the long trim that goes from the front of the headlight to the cover then you can get the handlebar cover off. As far as the windscreen grab the top from the front of the bike and pull towards you and lift it up.

Start at the haedlight ring. then the headlight. You should see a couple of nuts at the top that are attaching the chrome wind defector. The whole chrome necklace will need to be removed to get to the handlebar clamp cover.

The dealer wants $105 to putsome new handlebars on, this is why I'm trying to figure it out myself. I'm going to buy my handlebars on Father's day and then I will take the trim ring off and look at it. I know about the trim ring because I put it on myself. Thanks guy's

Also I really don't want to buy a manual for taking off the handlebars. I'm sure this would be one of the only mods I would do by myself. Once again thanks

P.S. not the windsheild itself. I bought the windsheild 3 weeks after I bought the bike. I know, I know, you just needed to ask because you never know what one is thinking[:-]

Hey Rico, aH-D service manual will cost you half of that labor charge for putting your bars on. You really should get yourself one. You will need to remove the headlight nacelle to get to the handle bar clamp. It is not difficult, but you should still pick yourself up a manual.

Hey Rico, nothing but time and a few tools, common sense and of course a few @#$%^ words. You have to take the headlight out, some small nuts and bolts that hold the mini deflector on that you have to take off. You have to pop the small cover off just behind the handlebars to get to the bolts that hold the handlebar clamp cover on that is made in with the mini windshield. Then you will see the handlebar clamps. Should be able to do this in about 30 min. or less...RandyNC

We will wait till after Father's day to explain how to adjust the clutch cable, adjust the throttle cables, find a source for the ferrules you lost, and fix the pinched wires on the handlebar controls. [sm=exactly.gif]

The most important advice that I can give is cover your front fender BEFORE you do anything. Cover your front fender BEFORE you do anything. Cover your front fender BEFORE you do anything. Cover it with 3 or 4 plush towels. You should really buy a service manual but if you don't and you get stuck, you can get help, trailer to a dealer etc. But once you put a ding in that front fender it's no turning back.

It's not hard to do the bars, but I bet without a SM you will be in the middle of something and have to stop and come in and ask the forum. Such as switch housing, grips, brass ferrel,or the lock cap etc.

Even if this is the only mod you will do, the SM is good just to learn about your bike.
