I started about where you have them, and then after a few trip moved them back. The close your eyes technique works.

Totally your personal preference but I would want them a little further back.
I want to just be able to keep a hand on the bars while I'm leaning back on the Mrs, feet up on the Highway pegs. Kinda like my lounge chair at home.

There's always the old school. They line up with your front end. That's where mine are. And will stay. Im not a fan of the pushed forward reach too far to be comfortable look.

Mine are 8" taller and I wish I could roll them forward a couple more inches but the faring is in the way, oh well I'm getting used to having my arms bent.

I'm running 16" Apes on my WG I like a little more bend in my arms but I adjusted the ones on my springer a lot the first 500-1000 miles getting them to my liking.

Never turn your back on one.

Personally I think they look stupid, and defeat the purpose of a fairing, which is two keep your hands out rain and cold. But I get some people live in warm area and don't go out in rain.

I think they are for people, who can't admit they don't ride a chopper. Some guys putting tiny windsheilds on.

I think theres more to it then the look. I would agree many people put them on as a look cool factor or because they think there a bad ***. But there are a lot of guys that are just more comfortable with Apes. Kinda like drag bars. Lots of people run them and I think a lot of guys run those with tall risers cause of sons of anarchy. Some guys from the sport bike scene like to be hunched over. Myself I hate them the little bitty pull backs that came on my wide glide were terribly uncomfortable for me. I'm used to Apes and that's what's comfortable I can move around in the saddle and hunch set up straight or slouch and have a good grip on the bars. So while some guys use it for the chopper cool factor others it's just comfortable.

Yeah my hands are above the fairing and I ride in all weather, the wet hands in the rain are more than worth it for my lousy back not hurting from being bent forward.

Rode some today. Got a little pain on the inside of the bend in my arm. Is that something to get used to, will go away? Or I should pull them back some?
