Yeah its true. You have to plan well. Make sure you stop for breaks. Realize though that even a 10 minute stop is valuable time. .. and yes .. I would reroute to avoid those border crossings. We went on a Round the Great Lakes ride a year or two ago. We waited at the NY / CN border crossing for a little less than an hour.

And here is a big tip.
When you stop for the breaks you will be waiting on traffic. Lights, stops signs etc etc.When the bike is not moving stand up to get your butt off the saddle. Even 2 or 3 minutes at a time helps.

I've only ever crossed into and out of Canada by road once in each direction. One took the best part of an hour, the other about twenty minutes. That's the time it would take to ride around 60 miles!
