Default Splines Stripped out On Shifter Lever.

I hope ya'll are better understanding this than another Forum. I went to down shift and nothing happened. I got home. The splines on the inner shifter had stripped out. Not the splines on the shaft. The lever that connects the rod to the tranny. OK. Follow me so far.? I drilled a 1/4 inch hole thu the lever. Then I tap drilled a hole through the shaft for a 1/4 inch by 20 bolt. Tapped the shaft. Insert a allen head 1/4x20 bolt though the shift lever and threaded the bolt into the shaft. What is so hard to understand about that. I caught all kind of hell about this this fix from a very well respected HD forum.

Thanks my Brothers. I thought it was such a simple fix. Apparently the gurus on the other forum have no idea. Maybe they over think things over there. It worked for me. They banned my thread. WTF?

Are you saying you drilled through #23 - SHIFT MECHANISM? You did not mention bike year but should be similar.

Drilling, tapping the shaft would weaken it. The lever only costs $20. Unless Im missing something, the other guys are right.

My thought is that the shaft is hardened, hence, harder to drill thru...but not impossible. I seriously doubt that drilling it as the OP suggests would significantly weaken it at all...with the bolt installed and tightened, it's probably stronger.

OP, I have a spare shaft and lever, I believe I'll try your idea...

I have done it many times in my past. As have a lot of my bros. It is a tried and true tested fix. Harley Tech Talk banned me because I offered this idea.

So drilling a hole in the shaft and screwing in a bolt makes the shaft stronger? The shaft is not that large of diameter anyway. And what happens when, not if, the bolt works lose and the shaft is further weakened because the tapped out hole is enlarged. According to your logic, a larger bolt will make the shaft even stronger. Not on my bike
