Angry Speaker Switch Issue

So I have done some troubleshooting and it appears the 3way switch for my speakers on the fairing cap has gone out. I am getting radio/cb through my headset but no sound to the speakers. I was able to rock the switch a few times and they come back on but that has stopped. I talked to local dealer and the replacement rocker switch is $96. Can I just replace that switch with a 3way rocker from a local parts house? Anyone know what the wiring schematic would look like for that setup or which pairs of wire work together. I have the manual diagram that gives me the electrical diagram of the switch itself but I am not entirely sure how to read the switch diagram. I have an 09 Ultra Classic.

Personally, I'd get some electrical contact cleaner and spray it in the switch while repeatedly working the switch back and forth. It could just be dirtu/corroded. If it doesn't fix it you're no worse off and if it does you've saved yourself some cash.

Any ideas on where to spray the contact cleaner? I would imagine I just remove the switch and try to force the contact cleaner down inside it?

I had an issue similar on my 2009 FLHTCU where I would work the switch between positions when the sound went out. It would come back on for an indefinite amount of time and I would move the switch to the other position where the sound would return. It stopped doing it though after several months...maybe it was from working the switch back and forth enough times who knows. I have since replaced the radio with an aftermarket unit.

Cleaning the contacts is cheep and quick, worth a shot.

Do you have a stock radio?
Have you gone through the sticky thread at the top of the page?

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...on-radios.html

Although it may be the switch, sound coming through the headset and not the speakers could also be problems with the amp chips in the stock radio (very common problem.)

You might want to see if there are any codes and post them, along with listing any mods to the bike (like bars, amps, etc.)

Also, if you haven’t replaced them already, there is a new part number for the two front screws on the handle bar mount. They have shorter heads so there is less chance of the radio hitting them and causing damage to the radio. If you have to take out the radio for some reason it is something you should do.

This my 2010 was doing the same thing, had replace the stock radio. Eventually the problem will get worse and worse and the speakers will stop all together. As IKnowNot mentioned, its a pretty common issue. If you don't want to buy a new one, Iron Cross can repair it and make it better for about the same cost as a used replacement.

I haven't read the sticky but I will. I did do the HK Diagnostics first before posting and the only thing showing was the FL Speaker Open. I did have a Hogtunes amp but removed it to see if that was my issue. Even after removing the amp the error code remains after resetting the radio to factory. I just added new bars about a month and a half ago but everything is working fine on that side of things. All switches and controls operate as they should. The speaker switch on the fairing cap doesn't run through bars so it should not be affected.

Is there any way of testing the switch itself before replacing? Voltage, resistance, etc to see what it should be?

seems like I remember the open code being normal for the HT amp setup but I also believe it was both FL and FR that would show open.
