Well the headwind got me last weekend. I jumped on to I-35 for a 40 ride south to get breakfast last Saturday. I notice immediately a lot more turbulent air buffeting my helmet around and I had to down shift to 5th when passing cars while trying to maintain 75 mph. This has never happened to me on my 14 Limited with a stage I and header. I typically can ride 2300 rpms on I-35 with no trouble.
I don't know what the wind was, but when I started south to Norman, my instant mileage gage read that I had 260 miles in my tank. 40 miles later it said I had 180 miles. At the end of my ride back, the gage said I had 169 miles left.
Personally, I think if you're shifting by the speedometer or the tachometer, you're doing it wrong. I shift by ear - by the sound of the motor. Tach and speedo quotes are "guidelines".
Engine sound comes into everything RPM-related.
I'll notice the speedo/tach readings, for info, but I usually shift based on throttle response. I like to run high enough RPM that I can get decent acceleration or deceleration started with just a throttle change.
