Default Emissions testing

Have a new FLHTC, and am very curious about the Stage 1 modifications that are widely discussed in the forums. Live in Idaho in a county that doesn't do emissions testing (God bless the agricultural arena!), but there's more and more talk about it happening in the near future. Will doing the Stage 1 cause a problem in regards to this testing, if/ whenit ever comes into effect? Just by reading the posts there have been a LOT of modifications done to the new bikes with great success, but am curious about the ramifications regarding emissions. If it's a stupid question, oh well, at least I can hear how it affects some of the others out there. Used to live in California and that state is very particular about modifications, be it two wheeled or four, so just curious about any issues that may crop up. Any help?

Rumor has it that California was planning on starting emission testing on all street motorcycles in 2008 - but that may not happen now till 2010 as per EPA street motorcycles are to be water cooled by then???
But ya know California - It's going to happen someday???

California never had any plans but 2010. Manufacturers that make more than 300 bikes/year will need to meet certain standards towards that goal every year between now and then. (Hence the new engine and lean condition.) And for those of you living elsewhere, it is a federal standard so you will be effected also. If you build your own it should be exempt for as long as "you" own it.

I had heard that '05 and older models will not be affected by the EPA guidlines. Is that a true statement? Just curious if anyone knows the answer on it. Like in autos, there must be an 'exempt' prior to a certain year, I would think. ?????

They can only go back as far as the emission crap was installed from the factory.

Which was when? My '05 has a carb, and no o2 sensor. Just not sure what year the exempt will come in to play?

As far as I know 07 was the first year for the O2 sensors and the cats on the exhaust. I could be wrong but never heard of them being on the 06's or earlier. A lot ofthe SE mufflers were pulled off the shelfs last year in June, right before the 07's came out. I was taking the H-D Riders Edge Course as a refresher in early June when this took place and we were told by our instructors and the wrenches at Lancaster H-D that it was because of the new emission laws that were going in to effect for 07. Just what we were told. HTH, Bryan

I thought '06 had one o2 bung? I had read somewhere, probally on this forum, a while back that it was just going to be an issue for '06 and newer. But, again, not sure if that is 100% correct.
