What iphone app do people recommend for planning and navigating a road trip? Ideally would be nice to plan on the PC then load into the phone but not necessary. I plan on finding some good back roads through some national forest and things so the auto routed paths are not what I am looking to do.
I use google maps on the pc; start with just the fastest way, then move to route to roads I want to take. After I am done, just text or email it to my phone.

The problem I have seen with google maps is when you open it on your phone or the link you saved, it does Not maintain your custom route. It changes it to the most direct and quickest path to you final destination. This has been very frustrating for me.
Overthehill, if this doesn't happen to you, how do you set it up to maintain your custom route?
I hear inroute is a good app for IOS. I have android and it is not available so I cannot speak to it's capabilities but I've scoured this forum and this app pops up a lot.
@ajnigle, sorry, I should have been more specific.....you are correct, just using the map itself doesn't work. You need to use google.com/mymap. Here is a good link to explain......
Nothing beats a good paper map, especially a state road atlas like the ones published by DeLorme. Once you identify the roads that interest you there is time to find the best gps or app to program.
On the audio forum there were recent posts on the Garmin Nuvi. Obsolete, oversized, no internal battery, but can be had for a song on ebay and is said to be waterproof and easy to input custom route choices.
I use Trye and save the route as a copilot route. Transfer to my phone and use the copilot app for navigation. Didn't know that they had myroute app up and running so will be trying that as it is by the people who created Tyre. Be sure and put in lots of waypoints as copilot or any other nave device is going to see things a little different and my use different routs between waypoints if you have them spread far apart.
I use the app listed below... it also can "track" those wandering rides when you're not in a planning mood, and you can go back and look to see where you went...
I use the Harley ride planner. Works like google maps as far as moving your route to the roads you want. Send the link to yourself when done and it keeps all the waypoints and directions. You can also load the route to a GPS.
